Mexicano por Barrio Zumba (video)
As a Spanish teacher, I’ve never gotten into celebrating Cinco de Mayo with my students. We talk about it, the misconceptions they have, the history of the event, some current cultural traditions, etc. When the students beg for a Cinco de Mayo party it seems as though they’re asking for a buffet so we don’t have to learn today. Neither central Maine nor central Iowa are places where Cinco de Mayo is widely celebrated and most of my Mexican or Chicano students are from northern Mexico.
Today we’ll use the song “Mexicano” by Barrio Zumba. Big thanks to Scott Benedict at Teach for June who told me about using this song (I believe his intent was for independence day) during a workshop last summer. I plan to use this song in class today to talk about the holiday and its history, current celebrations…
